Homeless Animals in Wake County
For our research project, we will be focusing on homeless animals in the Wake County area. In 2016, 4,190 cats and 5,246 dogs were taken into shelters (2016 NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). All of these animals likely became homeless due to neglect or running away from abusive homes. This issue affects people in Wake County because when there are stray animals running around, there is a chance that those animals could cause harm to them because they aren’t accustomed to humans. These animals, dogs especially, could also potentially have rabies which can be deadly to humans (2018 Wildlife Education & Directory of Wildlife Experts). The current status of the number of animals that are homeless is hard to measure, but there are over 70 million cats alone in the US in need of a home. . In addition, only about 6.5 million animals are taken into shelters throughout the US (2018 ASPCA).
This issue is important to the three of us because we all have our own pets. If our pets were the ones that were on the streets barely surviving, we would immediately stop and get them help. Why is it any different from other dogs or cats? We need to help because if we have the opportunity to help our own pets, we should strive to help others who aren’t as fortunate to have a home. Seeing how happy and loved our own pets are, is incentive for us to want to be able to provide the same quality of care for animals who aren’t as fortunate as our own. What everyone can do takes little effort.
The Issue
In 2016 1,251 cats and 899 dogs were euthanized in Wake County (2016 NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). The Wake County Animal Center was at full capacity for cats and nearing the capacity for dogs in late July 2017 after over 150 animals were taken in that day (2017 Wake County Communications). Something similar to this occurred in early November 2017, there were 67 dogs and 60 cats available for adoption with 127 kennels in use at the time. Most stray animals go to the Wake County Animal Center so this shelter is almost always full (2017 Wake County Animal Center). If an animal is sick and the shelter is at capacity, some may have to be euthanized.
This has been a problem since around 2016 when the numbers sparked to 2,683 cats and 2,368 taken into a shelter (2016 Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). Some of the causes of a large number of homeless animals include lack of responsibility, disposing pets, and abandoning pets (Humane Society of Central Illinois). This lead to almost full capacity in shelters and a large number of pets without homes. Some shelters like the Wake County Animal Center take in all stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals since they are operated by the county (2017 Wake County Animal Center). If this issue isn't taken care of soon, many animals will be euthanized and more shelters will be at full capacity.
The Solution
Other people are helping this issue by donating supplies that shelters need to take care of these animals. They donate newspapers, toys, old blankets, wet cat and dog food, and other things that shelters may need to provide adequate care to these animals. One of the many organizations that are doing a lot for homeless animals in the United States is the ASPCA. They are an organization that helps homeless animals get off the streets into shelters to eventually be adopted. Their mission statement is "to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”(2017 ASPCA). They have a shelter in Wake County that in 2016, helped 3,339 animals get adopted (2016 SPCA of Wake County). Even though many animals were helped, there is still much more to be done to help the millions of homeless animals in the US.
Since the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, most of the dogs that once had places to live are now roaming the streets, homeless. Of the 100 animals brought over to the US, forty were taken into the SPCA of Wake County (2017 News & Observer). The most important part in helping these animals is what the people of North Carolina are doing. They are reporting any stray animals to shelters, volunteering at shelters, and donating what they can. Everyone pitching in what they can be a dramatic change in the statistics of homeless animals.
The Conclusion
A way we could help would be to do a drive to collect supplies that the SPCA of Wake County is in need of. We are not old enough to volunteer at any of the shelters in Wake County so organizing a drive for a shelter is the most simple way to do so. We will donate the items collected to the SPCA of Wake County. To spread the word we thought sending home letters with the students would be the easiest and quickest way. After the drive is over, we will deliver the collected supplies to the SPCA shelter in Raleigh. We contacted someone at the SPCA of Wake County, and they sent us a wishlist of items they are in need of at the shelter (2017 SPCA of Wake County). When it comes to transportation we will need a short bus, and at least ten volunteers, a teacher, and at least one chaperone to deliver the supplies to the SPCA. We would start the drive about two weeks prior to June 6th and have boxes around the school to put the donated items in, and to make posters and hang about five around the shelter. The time frame of these activities would start with collecting the supplies from around the school at around 8:00 am. Then we would pack up all the donations onto the bus by 9:30 am. When we get to the SPCA(the drive over is only about 20 minutes) we would drop off the donations, help out with what they would like us to do and head back to Martin. This project requires little effort from anyone. Our goal of this project is to help the animals that don’t have homes as much as we can. We want the animals in the shelters to be happy and healthy.
